The University of Nottingham (UoN) is one of the few institutions of higher education in the United Kingdom which offers a dietetics and nutrition degree leading to registered dietitian status with the healthcare professions council. The course is heavily science based concentrating on core science subjects such as nutrition, pharmacology, physiology, biochemistry, and applied dietetics. There are 3 practical elements to the course where you develop your clinical skills by working with experienced registered dietitians within a hospital and community dietetic department. Placements enable you to gain experience in a clinical setting and put theory into practice. Dietetics offers a diverse and rewarding career, many graduates start out in a hospital setting to gain a fundamental foundation and broad understanding of nutrition and its role within certain disease states. Dietitians also work in advisory roles for the private sector companies such as Slimming World employ Dietitians. Dietitians can also work within academia focusing on research and teaching roles.
Both Nichola Williams and Emily (Tig) Bridge studied the Master of Nutrition (MNUtr) degree at The University of Nottingham and went on to work in local Nottingham NHS hospitals. Tig is known nationally for her work within burns and wound care and her involvement in the British Burns Association. Tig now works as a freelance dietitian and Co-founder of The Dietary Edit alongside her NHS role. Her freelance work has brought opportunities to work for charities such as The Katie Piper Foundation providing dietetic input to burns survivors.
Nichola continues to work as a gastroenterology dietitian within the NHS supporting patients with bowel disease. Nichola has a strong interest in cardiovascular health and has worked with cardiac patients undergoing cardiac surgery such as bypass grafts at the Trent Cardiac Treatment Centre. Nichola is an experienced dietitian in providing advice on diet and cardiac rehabilitation. Nichola is also co-founder of The Dietary Edit.
